For Professionals Serving Children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

All workshops are collaboratively presented by:

REGISTRATION PROTOCOL

  • Workshops are free for North Carolina professionals serving children who are deaf or hard of hearing; registration is to be done online at www.ncbegin.org
  • Fee for out-of-state participants is $50 per workshop and payable online via PayPal as part of the registration process.
  • Registration deadline for each workshop is 1 week prior to the workshop.
  • Upon registration, you will receive a confirmation e-mail. 
  • If a workshop is full, you will be put on a waiting list and receive an e-mail notification.  Participants who are on a waiting list will be notified via e-mail as soon as a space becomes available.
  • Non-ASHA CEUs will be offered for each workshop.
  • To cancel a workshop, send an e-mail to Lendia Fonville at lfonville@ncbegin.org.
  • Participants who need communication accommodations need to make arrangements a minimum of 2 weeks prior to the workshop by contacting Djenne Morris at dmorris@ncbegin.org.  Confirmation of attendance will be required 3 working days prior to the workshop.  Cancellation of attendance less than 3 working days prior to the workshop will result in the participant being charged for that accommodation.

What to Do While Waiting for a Cochlear Implant

Workshop Description:        This 1-day workshop is designed for any professional who works with children who are deaf or hard of hearing in an educational setting from infancy to school age.  These professionals often encounter students with varying degrees of hearing loss who may be candidates for cochlear implants, or who are already in the candidacy process, and may question how to address the time period prior to implantation.  Candidacy guidelines beyond the audiogram will be discussed as well as how to utilize all available information when assisting the educational and cochlear implant teams.  Using case studies, videos, and documented research, participants will learn about how to make the most of each encounter prior to implantation.

Presenter Credentials:          Renee is an itinerant teacher with 20 years experience working with the Eastern North Carolina Early Intervention Program for Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.  She graduated from Atlantic Christian College (aka Barton College) with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Deaf Education and an add-on B-K Certification.  Her experience includes working with infants, toddlers and preschoolers with varying degrees of hearing loss.  Renee has spent the past 12 years working specifically with children with cochlear implants.  She serves as a mentor, coach and resource to her colleagues.

            Krista is the coordinator for the Office of Education Services Resource Support Program, which provides support for professionals in NC who work with students who are deaf or hard of hearing.  Krista is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Speech-Language Pathology and is a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist/Certified Auditory Verbal Therapist.  In addition to public school experience, she was the speech pathologist for the cochlear implant team at the University of Michigan from 2001 to 2006, and worked as an auditory education consultant for Advanced Bionics Corporation from 2006 to 2009. 

            Kristin has been involved with the field of Deaf Education for over 5 years.  She is a Parent-Infant Educator for the Western North Carolina Early Intervention Program for Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.  Kristin received her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  Her dual certification is comprised of Birth-Kindergarten and Education of the Deaf, K-12.  Kristin is certified as an Infant-Toddler Specialist and is currently in the process of obtaining her National Board Certification in Deaf Education.

Bloom & Lahey 1
Facilitating & Tracking Language Development I:
Using Bloom & Lahey and CASLLS as Roadmaps

Workshop Description:        This 2-day workshop will focus on the sequence of early language development using the Cottage Acquisition Scales for Listening, Language and Speech (CASLLS) in conjunction with the Bloom & Lahey Model for Typical Language as roadmaps.  Participants will gain knowledge about the developmental sequence of language and use these roadmaps to track and facilitate development by analyzing language samples.  Planning motivating language lessons for developmental, delayed and remedial students will also be addressed.

Presenter Credentials:          Kimberly is a Speech-Language Pathologist and the Project Coordinator for Project EAR (Enrichment through Auditory-Oral Resources), which offers support services to children in Eastern NC with cochlear implants, and to the professionals who serve them.  During her 10 years at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, she served on the Cochlear Implant Team of Eastern Carolina and worked with children and adults with a variety of impairments.  Kimberly received her Bachelor of Science Degree from James Madison University and her Master of Science Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Texas Woman’s University.

            Sherri has been teaching children with hearing loss since 1993, with a slight hiatus to have children of her own.  She has been an itinerant and a classroom teacher throughout the years.  Sherri has worked with children and families using Auditory Verbal, Auditory-Oral, and Cued Speech approaches.  She received her Master of Science Degree from the John Tracy Clinic/University of San Diego Program and is an LSLS Certified Auditory-Verbal Educator.  Sherri currently works as a Resource Support Program Specialist with the North Carolina Office of Education Services.  She currently serves on the NC AG Bell Association Board as a co-president.

Bloom & Lahey:  Practical Academic Applications

Workshop Description:        This 1-day workshop will address the issue of how to meet both the language and academic needs of school-age students who are deaf and hard of hearing.  The presenters will discuss how to organize and write a topic-centered language lesson which will include goals for language structures selected from the Bloom & Lahey Model or the CASLLS, academic goals selected from the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, and vocabulary.  A completed lesson form for social studies, science, and children’s literature will be presented and discussed.  Participants will develop a topic-centered language lesson of their own choosing.

Presenter Credentials:          Barbara has two Master of Science Degrees, one in Audiology and another in Deaf Education.  She started a 4-county regional program for students who are deaf in the public schools in Louisiana that covered identification through high school.  In North Carolina, Barbara has served on the staff of the Auditory Learning Center in Raleigh, with Wake County Public Schools, and most recently as a resource support program specialist for the Office of Education Services.  In 1989, she was given the John E. Robinson Award by the Louisiana Speech & Hearing Association for distinguished contribution by an audiologist to the public schools of Louisiana and named a Fellow of that association in 1994.  In 2008, she was given the Dan Ling Memorial Award by the North Carolina AG Bell Association.

Elissa is a graduate of Barton College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Deaf Education and Elementary Education.  She has been working in Wake County for 6 years.  In 2005, she started the Cued Speech program at Lacy Elementary.  Currently, she is working as an itinerant teacher for the hearing impaired.  She is also working on her National Board Certification for Deaf Education.

Speech Babble

Workshop Description:        This 1-day workshop is designed to target the phoneme level of the Auditory Learning Guide.  The agenda will include information on typical babble development, speech acoustics, why and how we do speech babble.  This is a very practical workshop with time to practice and participate in hands-on activities you can take back to your caseload.  If you are not currently doing speech babble, it allows you to start immediately when you return or fine-tune your skills if you are already engaged in this with your current population.  The workshop is appropriate for early interventionists, speech-language pathologists, teachers of the deaf, audiologists, or parents of children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Lillian Henderson, MSP, CCC-SLP/LSLS, Cert. AVT

Presenter Credentials:          Hannah is the current CASTLE Director in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She directs the Professional Training Program as well as coordinates staff and various other programs.  Hannah also conducts Auditory Verbal Therapy sessions and is working with Holly Teagle on a multi-center research study led by NIH.  Hannah earned her Master’s Degree from the University of South Carolina in Columbia in the Auditory-Verbal track.  She is an adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.   

Lillian has worked with the CASTLE program in the Department of Otolaryngology/ Head and Neck Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since August 2002.  Prior to that, Lillian worked in the Durham Public Schools for 5 years providing speech-language therapy for preschoolers, and Parent Participation Sessions for children in the system who were deaf of hard of hearing and learning spoken language.  Lillian earned her Master’s Degree from the University of South Carolina in Columbia in the Auditory-Verbal track.  She is currently the lead diagnostician for the UNC Pediatric Cochlear Implant Team.

Audiology 101 for Speech-Language Pathologists & Educators

Workshop Description:        Speech-language pathologists and teachers of students who are deaf or hard of hearing have an important role as part of each child’s auditory team.  This 1-day workshop will provide participants with an overview of audiological diagnostics, hearing disorders such as auditory neuropathy/dys-synchrony, auditory technology, speech acoustics and how all of these factors interact to affect the whole child.  Practical application of speech acoustics to therapy planning and determining when to refer for further testing will also be discussed.  The presenters will use case studies and videos to demonstrate the importance of understanding auditory input in order to provide optimal services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Presenter Credentials:          Lisa has been an audiologist with the cochlear implant team at CCCDP since July 2006.  Prior to arriving at CCCDP, she spent 4 years as the audiologist at Clarke School for the Deaf in Massachusetts.  As a musician, she has a particular interest in music perception for children with cochlear implants and has collaborated with CASTLE therapists to develop music experiences in the classroom.  Lisa has extensive experience with hearing aids and she is currently conducting a study of hearing aid benefit among children who have a cochlear implant in the opposite ear.  Lisa received her Master’s Degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences (MSSH) from Washington University in St. Louis and her AuD from the University of Florida.  She currently serves on the NC AG Bell Association Board as the newsletter/website director.

Language & Literacy for Children with Multiple Challenges

Workshop Description:        This 2-day workshop will address the development of audition and spoken language in children with hearing loss and additional learning challenges.  Treatment strategies, short and long term planning, setting appropriate expectations, modification of treatment strategies and outcomes, collaboration with families and other service providers, and development of literacy skills will be discussed.  Specific learning challenges addressed will include, but may not be limited to, developmental delay, specific learning disability, cerebral palsy/motor deficits, autism, attention deficit disorder, and visual impairment.

Presenter Credentials:          Margaret received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology from West Virginia University in 1977 and her Master of Arts Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1979.  She has been a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist (LSLS) Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist since August 2005.  Margaret is also a certified NeuroDevelopmental Pediatric Therapist.  She has worked in the public school system, private practice, and a variety of early intervention programs.  She is currently employed as a Speech-Language Pathologist/LSLS Cert. AVT with the Western North Carolina Early Intervention Program for Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

Informal Reading Assessment and Strategies

Workshop Description:        Delays in reading development are unfortunately common among students with hearing loss.  This 1-day workshop will focus on informal procedures that can be used to assess reading ability and suggested strategies to overcome common plateau points in the reading development of students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing.

Presenter Credentials:          Denise is the Lead Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing in the Durham Public Schools.  She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Luther College in Iowa and a Master of Science Degree in Deaf Education from Illinois State University.  As a deaf educator for over 2 decades, she has worked with students of all ages, degrees of hearing loss, and functional levels, in self-contained, resource, itinerant, and parent-infant home settings, and using various communication modes and instructional methods.  She is a National Board Certified Teacher in the area of Exceptional Children-Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and was selected as Teacher of the Year in Durham School of the Arts in 2006.  Denise has published several articles in professional journals in the field of deaf education and has presented at numerous conference and workshops.  She is a member of CAID, AG Bell, and NEA.

Workshop Description:        This 2-day workshop is for any member of the educational team of a student who is deaf or hard of hearing.  Participants will receive an overview of the process of mainstreaming, factors to consider when evaluating placement of a student, classroom modifications, and utilization of support staff.  Establishing appropriate goals, therapy plans and monitoring progress of students with hearing loss who use manual communication or spoken language will also be addressed.

Presenter Credentials:          Aubrey received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Deaf Education in 2002 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  She worked as an itinerant teacher for the public school system for 6 years, serving students ages 3-21.  Aubrey received her National Board Certification as an Exceptional Needs Specialist in 2007.  In 2008, she joined the Resource Support Program with the Office of Education Services to provide outreach services to professionals, parents, and school systems serving students who are deaf or hard of hearing across North Carolina.

Sharon received her Bachelor of Science Degree and Hearing Impaired Certification from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1985.  She taught preschool, kindergarten and 1st grade at the Central North Carolina School for the Deaf from 1985 to 1996.  Sharon worked as a resource teacher for Guilford County Schools in the Exceptional Children’s Program from 1996 until 2000, when she decided to follow her heart again and begin working with children who are deaf and hard of hearing in the Central North Carolina Early Intervention Program for Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.  She has her Birth through Kindergarten certification, C.E.D., Infant-Toddler credentials and National Board Certification as an Exceptional Needs Specialist.  Sharon is currently part of the Resource Support Program, which is an outreach component of the Office of Education Services, and offers a variety of services to parents, professionals and school systems related to the education of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Cochlear Implants

Workshop Description:        This 2-day workshop includes an overview of the history and evolution of cochlear implant technology, a tutorial of the basics of cochlear implant components and function, and an explanation of the UNC cochlear implant evaluation process with consideration of factors affecting patient outcomes.  Reviews of cochlear anatomy and physiology, surgery, device programming and follow-up care, as well as important aspects of habilitation will be covered.  Representatives from the 3 cochlear implant manufacturers will provide specific information on the technology that is currently available.

            Holly is the Director of the Carolina Children’s Communicative Disorders Program (CCCDP) and Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She began her career in audiology at the University of Iowa, where she received her Master’s Degree in 1985, and has been involved with cochlear implant patient care and research since that time.  She joined the faculty at UNC in 2003 and teaches cochlear implant courses for the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences and the AG Bell First Years program.  Holly’s published work includes journal articles and book chapters related to cochlear implant patient management and outcomes; she currently serves on the NC AG Bell Board as well as CI Manufacturer Audiology Advisory Boards.
